DESCRIPTION
The ZR36730 Vaddis IV DVD decoder is targeted at fourth generation DVD and convergence products. With its high level of integration and flexibility, the ZR36730 is a versatile digital video
and audio processor. This new generation part builds upon Zoran’s success in the DVD market, incorporating enhanced audio and video functionality. Leading audio algorithms, such as HDCD, MP3, DTS, Dolby Digital, Pro Logic, and MPEG 5.1 decoding are supported in this single chip solution. In addition, the video feature set has been expanded to include image
quality enhancements and augmented On-Screen-Display (OSD) functionality. Through the StandardPlusTM design methodology, Zoran is building upon the standard to provide leading-edge capabilities for advanced DVD players and convergence devices, such as WebDVD players.
DVD Decoding
The ZR36730 handles all aspects of DVD decoding according to the specification. This single chip solution performs DVD authentication/decryption, demux and parsing, MPEG-2 or MPEG-1 video decode, sub-picture decode, highlight processing, and audio/video synchronization. The integrated OSD unit provides 32 colors and 8 blending levels which are necessary for sophisticated on-screen user interfaces. In addition, DVD-Audio is supported by the ZR36730’s integrated digital audio processor.
Highest Quality Audio
With its integrated 54 MIPS Audio Decode Processor (ADP unit), the ZR36730 is capable of supporting a host of advanced audio algorithms. Based on Zoran’s field proven audio DSP
technology, the ADP unit enables the development of a DVD system which meets the highest quality audio output standards, such as for Dolby certification. In addition, algorithms from our
SiliconSoftwareTM library are supported, including 3D Headphones and enhanced Karaoke. The embedded ADP unit is a 20-bit audio DSP enabling Vaddis solutions to deliver audiophile quality output.
Benefits Overview
The Zoran® (ZR38601) is a high-performance, programmable digital audio sig-nal processor capable of real-time, single-chip decoding of Dolby Digital 5.1- channel and MPEG-2 digital surround algorithms. It is the fourth generation decoder made by Zoran, based on the proven ZR38600 architectures.
The hardware block floating-point makes it optimum for Dolby Digital and complex digital audio signal processing applications. Due to its programmable high-performance and high level of integration, the ZR38601 is unusually flexible in meeting a wide range of system requirements
at the lowest possible system cost. At the low end, it can provide standard fixed decoding functions with only a DAC and an optical interface for the S/PDIF input, in addition to the oscillator crystal. At the high end, it can provide eight channels of output, analog input, long-delay memories, custom operating features, and the ability to be upgraded with downloaded
SiliconSoftware® product enhancements. Yet all of this flexibility comes without design complexity. Highly configurable standard functions with a simple command structure minimize software development, while a full set of development tools are available for the highly-custom product developer.
The ZR38601 is suitable primarily for audio applications such as Audio/Visual home theater receivers, Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB), 3-D audio, six-channel speaker systems, and Karaoke processors; video applications like SDTV and HDTV stereo television receivers and digital cable, and satellite TV settop boxes; and multimedia PC applications such as DVD players.
General Description
The Zoran ZR38601 is the latest digital audio processing member of the ZR38000 high-performance, programmable digital signal processor product line. It is especially configured with peripherals, I/O capability, and software for digital audio. Today, quality digital audio starts with a primary decoding function, adds appropriate data stream protocols, and interfaces with I/O configurations to match the application. The ZR38601 has these primary decode and protocol software functions yet has processing cycles left for additional product-distinguishing features. The ZR38601 also has the necessary flexibility in system I/O and hardware configuration.
The ZR38601 is pin and instruction-set compatible with the earlier ZR38600, but with a higher 50-MIPS processing rate and larger internal program and data RAMs and ROM. These features provide new 96-kHz sample rate S/PDIF decoding, and increased processing cycles and memories for additional functions. New hardware features are a programmable timer, a Z2C
serial host interface, and more support for the 24-bit I/O data formats.
Functions
Dolby Digital and MPEG with variations are the primary decoding functions in use today. The ZR38601 has these and their associated test function with the required set-up, operation, and system functions to make them usable in an end-user product. In addition, an ever increasing number of SiliconSoftware functions can add special enhancing and differentiating features to products.

Description
- High Throughput
The PM-36 can sustain data rates of 80 or 110 MB per second to support real time operations. In addition, it implements two advanced features that maximize throughput and system performance:
• Programmable code rate control–This optional mode limits the encoded output data bandwidth to a predefined rate by dynamically reducing the quantization accuracy on a block-byblock basis, as required. This assures maximum throughput in high-speed peripherals.
• Programmable code size control–This mode allows definition of an upper limit for the size of the encoded output file so that it does not exceed a fixed memory buffer size. This is achieved in a single pass of the data, with no degradation in performance.
- Efficient Coding
The PM-36 features several advanced JPEG coding techniques for improved efficiency. Four loadable Q-tables are available for dynamic quantization control on a block-by-block basis. In addition, The PM-36 contains two loadable Huffman table pairs, which improves coding efficiency by allowing the system to use different encoding factors with out reprogramming the device.
- Highly Integrated
The PM-36 features an internal Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) that enables the chip to generate its main internal clock frequency from a lower-frequency signal. This reduces emissions and simplifies board design, particularly in systems using low-power CPUs and no external SRAM.
- PM-36 Capabilities
The PM-36 enables the following combinations of operations to be performed on the data stream during one pass through the device: Raster format image data: Converted to Block mode, subsampled 2:1, and JPEG encoded Block format image data: JPEG encoded JPEG-encoded data: JPEG decoded to raw format, upsampled 2:1, and output in Block or Raster format
- Design Considerations
The PM-36 can be easily integrated into a variety of systems. Design features include:
A simple peripheral interface for use with any standard processor Programmable control port bus width (16 or 32 bits) Flexible input and output ports, which simplify system design Input and output ports can be sized at 8, 16, 24, or 32 bits wide and contain bit, byte and word order controls to match any processor bus requirements 256-byte buffer on both input and output ports can minimize or even eliminate external buffering requirements High speed I/O modes, synchronous FIFO and Burst DMA modes The PM-36 requires little in the way of external support chips. A minimal system requires only a frequency source. An external SRAM array (up to 4 MB) may be added to enable raster format data streams. The external SRAM is used to store input or output lines for raster-to-block or block-to-raster conversion operations
